Why solar gain through glass is so expensive to cool.
On an un-treated south- or west-facing window, the glass itself is doing very little to block heat. Even modern low-e helps with conductive heat but lets significant infrared through.
When one room runs hot, the AC fights it across the whole house. Reducing solar load at the glass lets the system reach setpoint more easily.
